Safety Performance Evaluation of G4(2W) W-Beam Guardrail with Blockouts Raised by 3” Background

چکیده

Background Barriers are designed and tested to specific design parameters and variations from the design requirements can influence their performance. For this reason, there are tolerances set for the installation and maintenance of w-beam guardrails. These installation guidelines call for a rail height of 27.5 inches plus or minus 3 inches. Despite the efforts to comply with the guidelines, a myriad of factors pose challenges to keeping barriers at the designated height. Factors that influence the effective height of a guardrail include incorrect installation, ground settlement, damage from nuisance hits, and roadway resurfacing. Recent research has shown that guardrails even an inch lower than the guideline height result in a greater propensity for vaulting by the larger vehicles on the road (e.g., 2000 kg pick-up trucks) [1].

Evaluation of Rail Height Effects of the Safety Performance of W-Beam Barriers

The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of rail height on the safety performance of G4(1S) w-beam guardrail systems. The study involved three steps. In the first step, a detailed finite element model of the G4(1S) guardrail system was created. The model incorporated the details of the rail, connections, the post, the blockout, and the soil in which the post was embedded. To val...

Crash performance of strong-post W-beam guardrail with missing blockouts

Missing blockouts in a strong-post w-beam guardrail, a condition most commonly associated with environmental decay or crash damage, has never been thoroughly investigated. To determine the risks posed by the removal of a blockout, a combination of component-level pendulum testing and full-scale finite element models of crash tests was used to assess whether a missing blockout renders the guardr...

Evaluation of the Midwest Guardrail System stiffness transition with curb

A W-beam to thrie beam stiffness transition with a 102-mm (4in.) tall concrete curb was developed to connect 787-mm (31-in.) tall W-beam guardrail, commonly known as the Midwest Guardrail System (MGS), to a previously developed thrie beam approach guardrail transition system. This upstream stiffness transition was configured with standard steel posts that are commonly used by several state depa...

Simulation of motorcyclist's kinematics during impact with W-Beam guardrail

W-Beam guardrail system has been in use as a standard for roadside safety barrier since 1950s. Recently, its safety performance standard has been upgraded to absorb impact from large vehicles. This performance standard requires guardrail system to be capable of capturing and redirecting a large range of vehicle types and sizes but its effects on safety of motorcyclists are not yet understood. T...

Roadside Barrier and Passive Safety of Motorcyclists along Exclusive Motorcycle Lanes

The tremendous increase in number of motorcycles and fatalities in some ASEAN countries is becoming a main concern for the safety of motorcyclists along exclusive motorcycle lanes. The existing w-beam guardrail system along exclusive motorcycle lanes was originally designed to reduce severity of a crash when cars and trucks involve in run-off road accident – but not specifically to protect moto...
